Annual Pratham 5K walk brings together Chicago Community

On the morning of Sunday, August 18, Pratham Chicago hosted its second annual 5K walk at Busse Woods in Elk Grove Village. Despite the rain, 130 supporters turned out to make the brisk trek through the local forest preserve, followed by a delicious South Indian brunch of dosas, vadas and upma.

The event offered participants an opportunity to socialize and learn more about Pratham while getting some exercise in the fresh air. “It’s amazing to see, rain or shine, the dedication of Pratham volunteers,” remarked Yev Kozachuk, event sponsor and walk committee member.

Organizer Anu Krishnan was equally impressed by the turnout: “It is gratifying to see so many people brave the inclement weather and show up to support Pratham’s cause. Such a show of support is very encouraging and makes us strive harder to organize a bigger and better event next year.”

The photobooth—a new feature this year—was a huge success and added to the family-friendly atmosphere. With its growing participation, it is likely that the 5K will continue to foster increased involvement from the Chicago-area community for the Pratham cause.

“The Pratham 5K is one of my favorite events because it attracts so many members to the Pratham community and we all get the chance to bond during the walk,” noted Chapter volunteer Riva. Teen Avanti Parkhe, who spent two weeks interning at a Pratham center in India last summer as part of our Youth Leaders program, echoed this sentiment: “Everyone here is really friendly and inclusive, creating a great sense of community and togetherness.”

Chapter President Joher Akolawala thanked organizers and attendees: “The turnout is a testimonial to the dedicated support we receive for underprivileged kids from our sponsors, donors, and the community at large! Thank you!”
