Girls & Women Empowerment

Learning That Changes Lives
Every girl deserves the opportunity to learn, earn, and create the life she imagines.

Yet, for too many, these possibilities are out of reach. In underserved communities across India, social norms and limited resources often make it more difficult for girls to access equal learning opportunities.

Pratham’s Second Chance program enables girls and women to complete their secondary education in a supportive environment. Since 2011, more than 50,000 girls and women have earned their Grade 10 certification through this innovative model.

How It Works

01

Foundational Support

We start with four months of core learning—in math, language, and science—to reinforce essential skills that help rebuild confidence.

02

Intensive
Tutoring

Learners then receive six months of focused tutoring in preparation for their Grade 10 exams—a stepping stone toward future educational and workplace opportunities.

03

Life Skills

In addition to academics, Pratham provides lessons in health, childcare, digital literacy, and other essential life skills, such as communication, conflict management, and financial literacy.

04

Career Counseling

Mentors empower learners to identify and pursue career paths best suited to their existing skills and future aspirations.

05

Accessibility

The program is designed to fit seamlessly into the learners’ lives, with free classes held near their homes. By combining online and in-person sessions, the program offers flexible, engaging, and easily accessible learning opportunities.

06

Community Engagement

Collaboration with local stakeholders ensures learners are supported, enabling them to stay on track.

What A Second Chance Means to Girls and Women

When a girl has the opportunity to complete her education, the impact is transformative—not just for her, but for her family and community as well. Education equips her with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to pursue job opportunities, achieve financial independence, and make informed decisions about her life. Her family benefits as she contributes financially and supports her children’s education. At a community level, educated women tend to drive social change, take on leadership roles, and inspire others to pursue their education. Investing in a girl’s education has the power to create a ripple effect that reshapes futures, strengthens communities, and drives sustainable development.
