According to the World Bank, 70% of 10-year-olds in low- and middle-income countries can’t understand simple text. At Pratham, we see this firsthand—many fifth graders are struggling to understand letters and numbers. As these children grow into young adults, they are often left behind. But there is a solution.

Pratham partners with governments and communities to help preschoolers leap forward in their education and primary school children catch up with foundational reading and math skills.

Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL)

Pratham’s TaRL methodology helps children catch up and build foundational skills in reading and math. Children are assessed and grouped by learning level, not age, ensuring they start at the appropriate point for their abilities. This proven approach, rigorously evaluated by the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL), enables children to develop essential skills and make significant progress quickly and effectively at low-cost.

Our Programs

Pratham offers a diverse range of programs designed to support children in their learning journeys from 0-14 years of age.
Early Childhood Education: Volunteers in local communities lead engaging daily activities with preschool aged children at Anganwadis (rural childcare centres). These activities foster effective early childhood care and education practices, strengthening the foundation for future learning and school readiness.
Hamara Gaon (“Our Village, Our Community”): A comprehensive initiative aimed at improving rural education in communities over three to five years through a combination of classroom-based instruction, community learning camps, parent engagement activities, and capacity-building initiatives for local volunteers.
Learning Camps: Short-term, high-impact programs conducted over 30-50 days (3 to 5 camps of 10 days each) using the CAMaL methodology. Through engaging activities and games, children quickly master challenging concepts and progress through multiple levels of learning within weeks—all at a low cost. These camps not only accelerate learning but also make the process enjoyable.
Mothers’ Groups: Thousands of mothers’ groups meet weekly to learn how to track developmental milestones and engage their children in simple, home-based learning activities using household materials. To deepen the connection between schools and families, mothers are invited to participate in supplementary workshops at schools on a monthly or quarterly basis.

By partnering with policymakers and education departments, Pratham’s methodologies and programs have reached millions of children across India and expanded to over 20 countries worldwide.

Digital Programs: For decades, Pratham has been at the forefront of innovation, breaking down barriers to education and creating opportunities for children and youth. Pratham’s digital initiatives bring high-quality, interactive and engaging learning experiences to children and youth, no matter where they live. By leveraging technology, we extend our reach to even the most remote communities, equipping learners, educators, and families with the tools they need to succeed.
Volunteers: At the heart of Pratham’s scalability is our volunteer-led model. By training and mobilizing local community members, Pratham has established a grassroots network with the ability to deliver learning interventions in some of India’s most under-resourced communities.
