Teaching at the Right Level

Pratham pioneered the Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) methodology in the early 2000s as a simple, effective, and low-cost solution, to address India’s learning crisis. Backed by rigorous evaluation from the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL), TaRL has been proven to accelerate learning and help children catch up within a short period, breaking the cycle of falling behind in school.

Today, this approach is transforming education for millions of children in India and beyond.

How TaRL Works

Rather than teaching based on age or grade level, TaRL starts at the child’s current learning level. Children are assessed and grouped accordingly. The method uses interactive and engaging activities that make learning fun, helping students grasp foundational reading and math skills quickly.
The TaRL assessment tool categorizes children into five proficiency levels for reading and math, allowing instructors to identify learning gaps and track progress. Regular assessments help determine when a child is ready to advance, and children are re-grouped as they improve. The data is collected, displayed, and discussed, giving instructors, teachers, and parents clear insights into each child’s development.

Where is TaRL Implemented

TaRL was originally designed for children in grades three to five who had fallen behind in basic literacy and numeracy. Today, it serves children aged eight and above, equipping them with essential skills to move forward in their education.
Across India, TaRL is implemented in schools, during summer breaks, and in community learning settings with support from Pratham staff, teachers and community volunteers.

Global Reach

TaRL’s success has led to its adoption in 20+ countries worldwide through partnerships with Pratham International. Our team provides technical expertise to help governments and organizations design, implement, and scale TaRL programs, ensuring more children gain access to quality learning opportunities.
