Pratham at CIES 2026: Reflections and Takeaways

From March 28 to April 1, 2026, 15 colleagues from Pratham joined a global community of practitioners, researchers, and policymakers in San Francisco for the Comparative and International Education Society Conference. The conference theme for this year was “Re-examining Education and Peace in a Divided World.” For Pratham, the event provided an opportunity not only to share what we are learning from our solutions but also to listen to others and reflect on synergies and pathways for the evolution of our work across contexts. This year, colleagues from Pratham Education Foundation (PEF), Pratham USA (PUSA), and Pratham International (PI) contributed to conversations on several topics, including foundational learning, gender in education, youth training and skilling, school readiness and the importance of early childhood education, the growing role of data and technology in education, and new instruments and mechanisms for research as well as partnerships. With a combination of technical, program, and measurement experts, as well as senior leaders, the Pratham delegation was tasked with exploring diverse aspects of the ongoing discussions and sessions Key Takeaways: The global momentum to strengthen foundational learning continues There is an increasing interest in exploring the continuum, i.e., what happens before and after the primary years of schooling Data continues to be seen as important to programming, while conversations around evidence include new ways to generate and use it As digital and AI solutions become commonplace, there is a need to ensure their use is purposeful Pathways from learning to earning require additional scaffolding through connections to industry, use of technology, and more Now more than ever, collaborations are key, with a pivot toward context-driven partnerships and South-South consortia Global momentum to strengthen foundational learning continues Learning recovery in primary schooling in the aftermath of the pandemic is slow but steady. In several geographies, this trend has been complemented by the intersections of policy, practice, and partnerships. At CIES, diverse organizations, academics, and Pratham colleagues continued to stress the need to move the needle on this crisis. Meera Tendolkar, Director of Content and Training at Pratham International, participated in a roundtable discussion on making the problem of learning visible and how solutions like Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) have been leveraged to address these gaps. Across various panels and specialized events, the dialogue surrounding the essential role of the middle-tier continued, with diverse case studies from the Global South spanning India, Sub-Saharan Africa, and beyond, exploring viable models for systemic change. Organizations also presented insights on how evidence and technology can be leveraged to scale and sustain foundational learning outcomes. Meenal Joshi, Manager for Language Content and Training at PI, discussed lessons from the Language Learning from Familiar to Formal (L2F2) methodology, designed to build critical foundational literacy skills in both local languages and English. Expanding the conversation: What is before and beyond the “basics”? During the conference, several roundtable and formal papers addressed the continuum of learning and transitions through education systems. Tanvi Banerjee, Manager for Programs and Partnerships at PI, and Maritza Trejo, Director of Education at Glasswing International, discussed lessons from Pratham’s “Leap Forward” approach for Grades 1 and 2, which has been adapted to facilitate school readiness in Central American countries, along with caregivers and communities. Initial pilots show that these activities are resonating with parents. Qualitative surveys indicate that teachers’ perception of children’s progress is also positive. CIES presenters on early childhood education, Tanvi Banerjee and Maritza Trejo, pictured with their co-panelists. Credits: Pratham International During the conference, Tanvi Bhambry, Manager for Measurement, Monitoring, and Evaluation at PEF, also had the opportunity to present details of Pratham’s Leap Forward approach in India. This presentation included data and lessons learned from the year-long model in Delhi. The question of “what next” remains, though, with an increasing need to think about creative solutions that address critical learning gaps for older students and middle schools. Manushi Yadav, Director of Strategy and Partnerships at Pratham, discussed second-chance reintegration pathways for girls and women who have dropped out of school. Tried in India over several years, the Second Chance program has created strong opportunities to help thousands of aspiring youth complete their 10th-grade certification, bridging the gap across curricula and aspirations. Manushi Yadav, during her panel, “The North Star: Secondary Education Outcomes as Minimum Societal Standards”. Credits: Pratham International Conversations also emphasized the importance of addressing social norms and designing programs that reflect lived realities, with inclusive opportunities for all. For instance, a paper by Maitreiyee Krishna and Ira Wadhwa from PEF demonstrated that gender-responsive pedagogy can successfully challenge stereotypes. Their research from rural Uttarakhand and Haryana shows a significant increase in children’s acceptance of women in leadership and men in caregiving roles, by using experiential learning and role-play. Other memorable sessions included the launch of a Gender Diagnostic Toolkit by Echidna Giving in collaboration with Jaslika and One Future Collective. Consensus on using data for action, conversations on how we generate and use evidence Pratham teams shared how making learning levels visible can drive meaningful action. When learning gaps are clearly understood, they become easier to address. But this depends on data being simple, timely, and usable. These ideas were reflected in Sabarish Shankar’s presentation on empowering stakeholders to understand and use data in TaRL implementation. Amanda Beatty, Director of Research and Learning at PI, facilitating the workshop, “Using A/B testing to optimize your education programming.” Credits: Pratham International Evidence is most powerful not when it sits in reports, but when it actively informs teaching practices and system-level decisions. Amanda Beatty, Director of Research and Learning at PI, conducted workshops and chaired a session on using rapid A/B testing to iteratively optimize education programs at scale. Academics and practitioners at CIES also discussed quasi-experimental difference-in-difference approaches to make real-time, cost-effective adjustments to programs operating within government systems. Purposeful use of Digital and AI solutions is important to solving challenges facing education systems As technology becomes more prominent in education, Pratham is exploring how it can support learning

Saireddy Family Foundation Announces Major Commitment to Support Vulnerable Children Through Pratham

New York, NY, March 13, 2026 – Pratham USA today announced a significant philanthropic commitment from Saireddy Family Foundation in support of programs serving vulnerable children in Hyderabad, Telangana, India. The announcement was made during the India Giving Day livestream, a global campaign that celebrates and mobilizes philanthropy to support transformative work across India. The commitment will support Pratham’s Council for Vulnerable Children (PCVC), the organization’s child protection and rights arm dedicated to preventing child trafficking, child labor, child marriage, and other forms of exploitation while ensuring children from vulnerable circumstances remain engaged in education. With more than two decades of experience supporting over 40,000 children and families across India, PCVC helps in prevention, ensures protection, and sustains learning opportunities for those most at risk. The initiative will be a place-based community center model and begin by supporting 100 children and their families, providing sustained educational sponsorship. The Community Centres will serve as hubs for learning, mentorship, and child protection, ensuring young people receive the support they need to continue their education and pursue opportunities beyond high school. The program will also work closely with families to strengthen access to social protection schemes and livelihood opportunities. With a strong focus on supporting girls, who often face additional barriers to education, the program will provide sustained guidance beyond high school with pathways to higher education and vocational training that lead to long-term economic independence. Mahesh Saireddy, Pratham USA National Board member, and his wife Neeti Saireddy shared, “The Saireddy Family Foundation and PCVC’s mission are aligned and we are proud to make a long-term commitment that empowers children to learn without limits and boldly shape the futures they deserve. Together, we are transforming hope into real, lasting impact.” Reflecting on this support, Manisha Bharti, CEO of Pratham USA and Global Executive, added, “The generosity of Neeti and Mahesh is already enabling children from vulnerable circumstances to break barriers. Their leadership and steadfast belief in Pratham’s mission make it possible for these children to access the guidance, mentorship, and opportunities they need to thrive.” Building on this partnership, Pratham USA continues to create pathways where children from vulnerable circumstances can learn and thrive, empowered to reach their full potential and embrace futures without limits. A Roundtable on Global Education: Leaders in Conversation

The Pratham NY–Tri-State Chapter hosted an intimate Roundtable on Global Education on March 4, 2026 at the Lazard office in Midtown, New York, with the help of Sachin Patel of Capital Markets. This event brought together select leaders from across the hedge fund community for an evening of thoughtful discussion and connection. The evening opened with remarks from Sunanda Sharma, Associate Director of the East Region in Pratham USA who welcomed guests and shared the vision of Pratham’s NY–Tri-State Chapter in bringing together a community of leaders committed to advancing educational opportunity. As education systems worldwide confront learning loss and widening opportunity gaps, the conversation explored how philanthropy, corporate sustainability leaders, and nonprofits can collaborate to drive measurable, scalable impact. The evening created space to reflect on how funders are adapting, how partnerships are forming, and how private capital can think differently about its role in advancing education and skills development globally. As Emma Poole, Director of Lever for Change noted during the conversation, “Don’t let perfect be the enemy of good. Funders can act, and they can act now. This can be loudly, quietly, in collaboration, or on your own. There are so many ways to plug into this system, and every one of them is needed. The whole of our efforts is much greater than the sum of its parts.” We are deeply grateful to our outstanding panelists: Emma Poole from Lever for Change, Nitika Tolani from RPPL, and Haakim Nainar from Ares Management, for sharing insights on aligning capital with purpose and advancing evidence-backed models that deliver meaningful social outcomes. A special thank you to Sheru Chowdhury for expertly moderating the discussion and offering perspective shaped by his experience as a hedge fund CIO and Pratham board member. The evening concluded with reflections from Manushi Yadav , Director of Strategy and Partnerships at Pratham USA who shared more about Pratham’s work across India and the children and young people the organization reaches each year. She highlighted how Pratham partners with funders to advance solutions that prioritize both scale and innovation, testing new ideas while also expanding proven models that deliver measurable learning outcomes. It was especially meaningful to have a diverse group of hedge fund leaders represented in the room, all highly engaged in Pratham’s mission and leaving the evening with fresh perspectives and renewed inspiration for impact.
