Phoenix Launches Youth Initiative

The Phoenix chapter is proud to announce the formation of a youth group. Open to children ranging in age from 5 -18, the group will increase awareness about child illiteracy and Pratham’s work while facilitating volunteerism in the local community.

More than 200 volunteers have joined together since January, to help collect donations and pack food boxes for the local Midwest Food Bank in Arizona and plan to have many more activities in the coming months.

Sold-Out Pratham Phoenix Gala Funds Libraries For India’s Children

On September 17, 2016, Pratham Phoenix held their annual fundraising gala at the Scottsdale Hilton ballroom, raising an impressive $200,000 for Pratham’s library program.

The sold-out evening was a wonderful balance of the serious and lighthearted, ensuring the 600 attendees had a good time while pledging their commitment to Pratham’s mission of “every child in school and learning well.”

On April 30, 2016, Pratham Phoenix board member Amit Shah was interviewed on the Twizted Myrtle radio show—a platform for stimulating conversations about world issues. The host engaged Amit with questions about India’s political corruption, gender inequality and Pratham’s role in breaking the cycle of poverty and illiteracy.

Geetanjali Perform Benefit Concert for Pratham

A group of professionals, mostly physicians, who share a passion for music put their collective talents to use to raise money and increase awareness within the local Indian community about Pratham.

On April 23, 2016, the group, who perform under the name Geetanjali, gave a benefit concert. The months they spent rehearsing paid off: Geetanjali’s performance was breathtaking, commanding thunderous applause from the 250 plus audience members in attendance.

India’s Biggest Educational Challenge: How to Improve Learning

For ten years, Pratham’s Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) has informed communities and leaders that India’s elementary education is in dire straits. Only half of children in Grade 5 can read at the second-grade level or solve a simple two-digit subtraction problem. That’s about 100 million Indian children who are expected to move forward in life without having grasped the fundamentals.
