Pratham USA Readathon

About

Pratham USA's Readathon isn't just a fun summer activity—it's a chance for kids to make a real difference while discovering a love for reading. Participants also gain a deeper understanding of the learning challenges faced by their peers in India. Since 2012, hundreds of children and young people have joined the Readathon each year, supported by their families and friends through donations.

How it works:

  • The Readathon is open to children and youths aged 4-18. Younger children can participate by having a sibling, parent, or grandparent read to them.
  • Participants read for up to 30 minutes every day for 30 days and gather pledges for every book they read. These pledges raise funds that provide access to vital learning opportunities to children in India.
  • Parents, grandparents, and older siblings can act as mentors, helping young readers stay motivated. Adults can also participate as donors and sponsors.

Thank you to all of our 2024 Pratham USA Readathon participants! Stay tuned for more details about next year's Readathon.

Mohalla Libraries

Every child should have access to the magical world of books, but many children across India currently lack access to books. Our Mohalla Library (community library) program aims to change this, one neighborhood at a time.

Mohalla libraries are small community libraries set up in public spaces such as parks, community halls, and rooftops. Each library is stocked with 50-60 books, suitable for a range of interests and age groups. Local volunteers help run each library, helping children select new books and engaging them in fun activities like storytelling and games.

This year, your Readathon fundraiser will help us fill our libraries with age-appropriate books from diverse genres, ensuring more children have access to stories that ignite their imagination! Your contributions will also help us train and empower local volunteers — mothers, family members, and young people — who dedicate their time to fostering a love of reading amongst children in their neighborhoods.

Every $100 raised during the Readathon will help us support one Mohalla Library for one year!
